Rockstar has released yet more tantalizing Red Dead Redemption 2 content. We know that the sequel to Red Dead Redemption will actually be a prequel, set some years before the events of the first game. The game sees players taking control of Arthur Morgan, an enforcer in the infamous Van der Linde gang. Rockstar has emphasized that the gang will be a huge presence in the game, and to that end, Rockstar has released character art that allows players to take a closer look at the outlaws and criminals they’ll be riding with. All character art and official biographies can be viewed on the Rockstar Games website.

Dutch van der Linde

Dutch van der Linde
Dutch van der Linde

Players of the first game will remember Dutch as one of the game’s primary antagonists. By that point, he had turned into a raving madman, leading a motley gang from a wilderness camp. This game will allow players to see Dutch at the height of his power, as an intelligent and charismatic master criminal.

Arthur Morgan

Arthur Morgan
Arthur Morgan

This game sees players taking control of Arthur Morgan. Arthur Morgan and John Marston are like two sides of the same coin. Once upon a time, Morgan was Dutch’s most trusted advisor, confidante, and friend. A criminal since he was a child, Morgan’s never known anything else… but as Dutch descends into madness and paranoia, Arthur is starting to question everything he knows.

John Marston

John Marston
John Marston

John Marston was the main character in the first Red Dead Redemption. At that point, he had retired from a life of crime, but was forced by government agents to hunt down and kill his former comrades. Like his counterpart, Arthur Morgan, John is one of Dutch’s closest confidants and a sort of surrogate son to the infamous gang leader. Dutch took John under his wing at the young age of 12, saving him from a life on the streets and grooming him to become a possible successor.

Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
Bill Williamson

Another familiar face, ex-soldier Bill Williamson was one of the targets being hunted by John Marston in the first game. By that point, Bill had put together a gang of his own. For now, Bill is one of Dutch’s most loyal fighters, despite being a bit headstrong.

Javier Escuella

Javier Escuella
Javier Escuella

Another one of Marston’s targets in the first game, tracking down Escuella brought Marston south of the border. Escuella is a man of many talents: he’s a skilled bounty hunter, devoted revolutionary, and now, one of Dutch’s most loyal soldiers. Escuella’s revolutionary ideas meshed well with Dutch’s own, and made him a solid addition to the gang.

Sadie Adler

Sadie Adler
Sadie Adler

Sadie wasn’t always a criminal. When her husband was murdered, something shook loose inside of her, and she’s been hunting those responsible ever since. She’s got a vicious streak that makes her a very dangerous individual, but is fiercely loyal to her gang.

Susan Grimshaw

Susan Grimshaw
Susan Grimshaw

While Dutch is ostensibly the man in charge, Susan Grimshaw is the woman working behind the scenes to make sure everything goes smoothly. She keeps camp life in check and seems to act as a sort of judge, jury, and possibly executioner when someone steps out of line. To that end, Susan doesn’t suffer fools lightly, and has a low tolerance for any misbehavior.

Molly O’Shea

Molly O'Shea
Molly O’Shea

As the name suggests, Molly O’Shea hails from Dublin, Ireland. Somehow, she made her way stateside before meeting the charming Dutch van der Linde. She’s apparently a romantic interest for Dutch, but isn’t necessarily cut out for the life of an outlaw.

Hosea Matthews

Hosea Matthews
Hosea Matthews

Hosea is Dutch’s longtime friend and current second in command. Hosea is a canny and perceptive con-artist who’s words are just as dangerous as any weapon. Hosea appears to be getting up there in years, but as the old saying goes, “Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young.”

Pearson

Pearson
Pearson

Pearson is a former Navy man, and now the Van der Linde gang’s cook. Pearson is cheerful and talkative gentleman who is always ready to regale anybody unfortunate enough to wander into earshot with tales of his military days.

Micah Bell

Micah Bell
Micah Bell

Micah Bell is a criminal, through and through. A hitman by trade, Micah lives by his own code, and that code is ruthless. He’s a thrill seeker and a loose cannon, which is sure to cause friction with some of his fellow gang members.

Charles Smith

Charles Smith
Charles Smith

Charles, is, by all accounts, an honorable and decent man. So, what made this honorable and decent man turn to a life of crime? That answer remains to be seen. Despite being a recent recruit to the Van der Linde gang, Charles can hold his own, and can easily handle any task thrown his way… even if that task includes violence.

Leopold Strauss

Leopold Strauss
Leopold Strauss

Cold, calculating, and deadly serious, Strauss keeps a handle on the gang’s finances. What brought Strauss from Austria all the way to the wildlands of America remains to be seen, but for now, he’s doing just fine running the gang’s various loan sharking schemes.

Abigail Roberts

Abigail Roberts
Abigail Roberts

Players may know Abigail Roberts by her married name: Abigail Marston. Like her future husband, Abigail grew up an orphan, trying to survive any way she could… even if that meant taking work in some of the West’s seedier locales. Abigail is a survivor to the bone, and will do anything to protect her husband and son.

Jack Marston

Jack Marston
Jack Marston

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and Jack Marston is no exception to that rule… even though the village, in this case, is a well-armed band of outlaws. Jack was a playable character in the first Red Dead, but here we see him as a child. Jack’s been born and raised in the gang, and has taken a liking to the freedom-filled lifestyle. The gang cares about Jack as a surrogate son, and they all do their best to keep the more unsavory aspects of the criminal careers hidden from him.

Sean Macguire

Sean Macguire
Sean Macguire

Macguire is a smooth-talking Irishman and career criminal. He hails from a line of outlaws that spans generations, and also apparently had run-ins with the government at one point or another. As a result, Sean thinks he’s the greatest criminal that ever lived, which some might argue means he can get a bit too cocky for his own good.

Karen Jones

Karen Jones
Karen Jones

Karen Jones is a con woman extraordinaire, but when push comes to shove, is a crack shot with a pistol, too. Something of a pistol herself, Karen is a free spirit and will protect the gang’s freedom and way of life at any cost.

Reverend Swanson

Reverend Swanson
Reverend Swanson

Swanson is a holy man that has long fallen off the path of the devout. Giving into a life of sin, drink, and other manners of unholy living, Swanson eventually found his way to Dutch’s gang. He’s almost totally lost to the bottle, and the only thing preventing the gang from cutting him loose is that fact that he once saved Dutch’s life.

Josiah Trelawny

Josiah Trelawny
Josiah Trelawny

Trelawny is a consummate gentleman. Well-dressed and well-educated, Trelawny puts his charm to good use as a magician and con artist. As befits a snake oil salesman, Trelawny isn’t an easy man to pin down, but when he wants to be found, he always brings something juicy to the table.

Uncle

Uncle
Uncle

Uncle put in an appearance in the first game as a ranch hand on John and Abigail’s homestead. More of a lazy moocher than anything, it seems that Uncle didn’t change much since his days in Dutch’s gang. There’s no arguing that Uncle doesn’t pull his weight, but Dutch keeps him around more for his entertainment value than anything. He seems to be a sort of unofficial gang mascot.

Lenny Summers

Lenny Summers
Lenny Summers

Lenny Summers is a man with a checkered past. He had an idyllic childhood, an education, but all that was shattered at the age of 15 when his father was brutally murdered. A big believer in “an eye for an eye,” Lenny tracked down his father’s murderers and got his revenge. He’s been on the run from the law ever since, and has put the skills he’s acquired since then to good use in Dutch’s service.

Mary-Beth Gaskill

Mary-Beth Gaskill
Mary-Beth Gaskill

Mary-Beth is the most dangerous kind of criminal, which is to say an honest one. She lures in her marks with her pretty face and youthful naivety before robbing them blind.

Tilly Jackson

Tilly Jackson
Tilly Jackson

Don’t let her age fool you. Despite her youth, Tilly’s been running with gangs since she was only twelve years old. Eventually throwing her lot in with Dutch, Tilly’s a hardened criminal wrapped up in a deceptively innocent package, and makes sure her fellow gang members don’t forget it. She’s not one to be underestimated.

Rockstar has assembled a colorful cast of characters, and we can’t wait to learn more about them when the game releases on October 26.

Alex LaFreniere

Alex LaFreniere

Alex's first experience with video games came at the tender young age of 12, when his parents gave him and his brothers a PlayStation 2 for Christmas. They’ve probably been regretting that mistake ever since, because as soon he finished his first lap in Gran Turismo 3, Alex was hooked for life. In addition to writing for Softonic, Alex has turned that love of games into a voice acting career, and has voiced everything from grizzled old soldiers to vampire lords. When he's not gaming or getting behind the microphone, Alex can probably be found wandering the woods around Boston or putting together some new culinary delight in his kitchen.
